Breast Surgery

Diseases of the breast can be malignant (cancer) or benign (not cancer) and not all conditions will require surgery. However, careful assessment of the patient is vital in ensuring that the best and most appropriate treatment is received in a timely fashion.

Most often a diagnosis of breast cancer or conditions such as ductal carcinoma in situ will require surgical intervention. This is often confronting and disturbing for patients and their families. Mr Brandt and his staff pride themselves on the specialist care they provide for women and men at such a difficult time. In general a confirmed diagnosis of breast cancer will require surgery which may include

  • Wide local excision – breast conserving surgery.
  • Mastectomy – removal of the breast tissue.
  • Sentinel node biopsy
  • Axillary lymphadenectomy (removal of glands from the armpit)
  • Immediate reconstruction
  • Delayed reconstruction

For women with a lump, area of thickening or other concerns but without a confirmed diagnosis, Mr Brandt is able to offer

  • Comprehensive clinical assessment
  • In clinic ultrasound as an important clinical adjunct
  • Fine needle aspiration cytology
  • Core Biopsy under local anaesthetic
  • Drainage of fluid collection under imaging guidance
  • Education regarding breast self examination, screening etc.

Together with mammography (breast x-ray) and formal ultrasound, this is the ‘gold standard' of triple assessment for breast disease and forms the basis of further decisions about treatment.

Melanoma

The treatment for melanoma generally includes a surgical excision. This can include a primary or initial excision or biopsy followed by a further, wider excision once melanoma is confirmed. Such subsequent excisions also often take a margin of ‘healthy' skin. Mr Brandt is able to offer

  • Diagnostic services for example skin biopsy
  • Skin checks and clinical review of suspicious lesions
  • Wider excision
  • Sentinel node biopsy
  • Lymphadenectomy (removal of glands)

The decision to proceed with any one procedure is decided by the patient and their family together with Mr Brandt only after a full discussion of the clinical indicators and all other considerations.
